The Sacred Architecture — What You Will See
The Ram Mandir is a masterpiece of Nagara-style architecture, built entirely in Rajasthani pink sandstone (Bansi Paharpur stone). No iron or steel has been used in the construction — every joint is held by the ancient Indian technique of interlocking stones.
The Five Shikhars
The main tower (shikhar) soars 161 feet above the ground, symbolising the cosmic Mount Meru. Four smaller shikhars flank it — together they represent the Panch Mahabhuta (five elements). The kalash atop each shikhar is pure gold-plated copper.
The 84-Column Mandapa
The mandapa (hall) is supported by 84 beautifully carved columns, each depicting scenes from the Ramayana. Do not rush past them — every column tells a different chapter of Ram's life. Plan at least 30 minutes just for the mandapa.
Ram Lalla's Garbhagriha
The main sanctum houses the divine idol of Ram Lalla — Ram in his child (bal) form, approximately 51 inches tall, carved from black stone (Shyamal stone). He is dressed in yellow silk, adorned with fresh flowers daily, and seated on a golden throne. The idol was sculpted by Arun Yogiraj of Mysuru.
Key Darshan Points Inside the Complex
- Ram Lalla Garbhagriha — Main sanctum, the primary darshan
- Kaushalya Mata Mandir — Dedicated to Ram's mother
- Surya Mandir & Ganesh Mandir — Inside the complex, before entering main temple
- Sita Rasoi — Kitchen area with historical significance
- Parikrama Path — Sacred circumambulation route around the entire temple
- Yagya Shala — Where daily Vedic rituals are performed
Saryu Snan — Before Your Darshan
The most devout yatris take a dip in the Saryu river before darshan. This purification ritual is mentioned in the Ramayana itself — Lord Ram himself bathed in Saryu daily. The most auspicious ghats are:
- Ram ki Paidi — The main ghat with magnificent steps; best for sunrise snan
- Naya Ghat — Quieter, less crowded, preferred by many yatris
- Lakshmanghat — Named for Lord Lakshmana; carries great spiritual power
- Guptar Ghat — The holiest of all — where Lord Ram took Jal Samadhi
The Ayodhya App's offline map guides you from the Mandir to each ghat with walking routes and historical information.
